I was being stubborn, hanging on to it for some belief that it gave me street cred amongst conservative Christians. But, realistically, I was hanging on to it for some nostalgic reason. I don't want it in my house, I don't want to sell it, I don't want it available. I preached a sermon on it; someone emailed me and said it was just virtue signaling. I disagree, it's one less weapon out in the world. And there's nothing ‘signaled’ there. It's a real practical step in the right direction. Combined, we are laboring 40,000 minutes this month for each life lost to gun violence in 2024. We’re still making garden tools, but our challenge to our makers this year was to make something with kids out of destroyed guns. This network has grown significantly over that past 2 years and has officially become a part of the RAWtools programming. If you have been a part of our disarming network, you have been automatically added to this network. If you have been a part of our blacksmith and makers network, you have been added to this network, too! Initially started as an organic network of organizations coordinating buybacks and events for people to safely dispose of unwanted firearms, Guns to Gardens is now highly active across the country thanks to our training partners at Presbyterian Peace Fellowship and the work of Swords to Plowshares Northeast, New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, and Gun by Gun, God Before Guns, RAWtools South, and many others. We had no idea where that would take us. Whether its in our shop blacksmithing, or in a church parking lot cutting up a gun, survivors and volunteers alike tell us the same thing, “ It feels so good to do something with my hands ,” or “This is the healthiest way I’ve dealt with my anger in 30 years.” For many, the weight of the three-pound hammer is felt as they raise it above the anvil, adjusting their grip as they get a firm grasp. The weight of their grief and pain flows into the hammer and is embedded with each blow into the glowing orange metal. You can see the marks each swing makes on the gun barrel. You can feel the heat radiating from the forge and the gun barrel. If you’re doing this for the first time, you notice the smell, too. The energy built up from grief and pain is, at the same time , destroying the thing that caused harm and creating something that will bring life. Our bodies feel it all. This type of transformation is not to be rushed. It takes practice and time to transform metal from one thing into another. A barrel becomes a spade or a mattock, a rifle bolt a spoon, the wooden stock becomes a handle, others pieces into talking pieces for dialogue circles, art, jewelry, and whatever else the imagination of our Makers network dreams up. The slow work of transformation is in some ways a paradox to the instantaneous nature of gun violence. In a moment a life is changed. It takes a lifetime to navigate the grief and pain to a path of healing. It is because gun violence affects our bodies that we need an embodied response to address it. We cannot bury the feelings or explain them away. It is in embodied responses that we find paths of healing. As we grow, these embodied responses need a safe space to be activated. In Colorado, we have been operating out of donated garage space with little capability of hosting larger community gatherings for these embodied responses to gun violence. So we are taking the next step into a larger space and we need your help. Some steps you can take to support our work: -Become a recurring donor at rawtools.org/donation . In moving from an advisory board toward a working governance board, we’ve welcomed Jeresneyka Rose as our Board Chair. Jeresneyka (Jeh-Reh-Snay-Kah) Rose, known as Rizzo, of ArtByRizzo, is a self-taught visual artist and community advocate based in Southeast Colorado Springs. She has exhibited her works and led creative workshops nationwide. Rose has created and facilitated community-based art projects in partnership with numerous organizations such as Southwest Airlines, Food to Power, Trust for Public Land, Generation Wild of the Pikes Peak Region, Harrison District Two, and Pikes Peak Library District. She thrives off of allowing her creativity to be incorporated within community. It was an organic network of partners we had worked with previously, including New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, Swords to Plowshares Northeast, and Gun by Gun. RAWtools had learned how to run buybacks from these partners, or what we now call Safe Surrender Events. RAWtools had also trained these partners in making garden tools, art, and jewelry from firearms. Since it started, Presbyterian Peace Fellowship has become a major partner in offering action circles to teach faith communities how to host their own event where people can turn in unwanted firearms. Dozens of events happen across the country each year because of these partnerships. Due to rapid growth, Guns to Gardens is now an official program of RAWtools. You’ll also notice that our disarming network has been renamed to Guns to Gardens . Prior to (and still) Guns to Gardens, we had a national network of nearly 100 people who would help cut up firearms by appointment. That network will be combined with the Guns to Gardens Network to further grow the reach of our volunteers to help facilitate destroying unwanted firearms. Along with this growth comes added time by staff and volunteers to educate and train each faith community. While a part of this is volunteer, it is informed by staff that has to follow changing firearm law from state to state, liability insurance concerns, safety, and best practices.
