We're 13 years old! Maybe we'll have more of a rebellious spirit this year! This is the first firearm donated to us in February of 2013, an AK-47. Since then, we have destroyed thousands more in Colorado and built a national Guns to Gardens network with partners that has safe spaces for folx to get rid of unwanted firearms, including RAWtools affiliates in Philly, RAWtools Buffalo, and RAWtools South. Most importantly, we've created safe spaces for survivors to be a part of the process of transforming a gun into a garden tool or art to help with their grief and healing. We are feeling the tightening availability of grant funding, having lost some in 2025-2026 cycles connected to tightened budgets amidst national program cuts. That sentence triggered a wave of cognitive dissonance. I had to ask myself: how can I truly pursue a life of peace within this "global village" if I am harboring the very threat of violence in my own home? I realized then that I was carrying a burden I no longer wanted. When I first purchased my firearm, I used the standard justification: it was for "home protection," the same reason cited by the majority of Americans. But I saw now that I was merely subsidizing an industry that has been far more destructive to my community than beneficial. I had unwittingly adopted a generational mindset of distrust—a philosophy of preparing for a "worst-case scenario" that, ironically, often precipitates the very violence it claims to prevent. The math no longer added up; the risks of keeping the weapon far outweighed the perceived benefits. I recognized that it is not my burden to maintain social order through armed vigilance. I am not a soldier, and I do not need to live like one. Choosing to part with it is more than a safety decision; it is a philosophical stance. To live coherently with my values, I must let go of the tools of destruction. I would much rather see that metal forged into a tool that helps life grow, rather than one designed to end it. He often taught a different way of engaging, so as we follow Him, we pray for continued creativity as peacemakers.” -Amy, RAWtools volunteer 2nd Annual Peacemaker Summit RAWtools Philly and Red Letter Christians hosted the 2nd annual Peacemaker summit with RAWtools South adding training and smithing, as well as workshops from Waging Peace Project, Global Immersion, Philly Restorative Justice Practitioners and Violence Interrupters, Restorative Practices in High schools and elementary schools, and National Faith Leaders for Ending Gun Violence. We heard from Rev. Munther Isaac zooming in from Palestine, Lisa Sharon Harper, Rev. Sharon Risher, Rev. Hope Christiansen, Dr. Jer Swigart, Diana Oestreich, and enjoyed music from common Hymnal and John Francis O’Mara. Over 100 folks attended this intimate and accessible gathering to learn peacemaking skills and take them back to their community. Keep a lookout for info on next year’s summit in the fall! I bought this gun when I was in my 20s. I had a masculine ideology that led me to believe it was a good idea. Recently, I realized I don't want this in my house. I was being stubborn, hanging on to it for some belief that it gave me street cred amongst conservative Christians. But, realistically, I was hanging on to it for some nostalgic reason. I don't want it in my house, I don't want to sell it, I don't want it available. I preached a sermon on it; someone emailed me and said it was just virtue signaling. I disagree, it's one less weapon out in the world. And there's nothing ‘signaled’ there. It's a real practical step in the right direction. Combined, we are laboring 40,000 minutes this month for each life lost to gun violence in 2024. We’re still making garden tools, but our challenge to our makers this year was to make something with kids out of destroyed guns. This network has grown significantly over that past 2 years and has officially become a part of the RAWtools programming. If you have been a part of our disarming network, you have been automatically added to this network. If you have been a part of our blacksmith and makers network, you have been added to this network, too! Initially started as an organic network of organizations coordinating buybacks and events for people to safely dispose of unwanted firearms, Guns to Gardens is now highly active across the country thanks to our training partners at Presbyterian Peace Fellowship and the work of Swords to Plowshares Northeast, New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence, and Gun by Gun, God Before Guns, RAWtools South, and many others. As we have gathered participants form all of these networks we know some emails are falling through the cracks.
